By the nature of the fighting, the Battle of Stalingrad is divided into two periods: the defensive, which lasted from July 17 to November 18, 1942, the purpose of which was the defense of Stalingrad, and the offensive, which began on November 19, 1942 and ended on February 2, 1943 with the defeat of the grouping of German troops operating in the Stalingrad direction.
